EU-Backed Initiative Conducts Junkshop Mapping and Survey of Informal Waste Workers in Tagbilaran City

Supported by the European Union-Philippines Green Economy Partnership, the EPR-Driven Project successfully conducted the mapping of Junkshops and the survey of Informal Waste Workers in Tagbilaran City from June 1 to 19, 2026. These activities provided essential baseline information that will support the organization, recognition, and capacity development of key stakeholders in the local waste management sector.

Implemented in partnership with Bohol Integrated Development Foundation (BIDEF) and the Participatory Research, Organization of Communities and Education towards Struggle for Self-reliance in Bohol (PROCESS-Bohol), the EPR-Driven Project aims to accelerate Tagbilaran City’s transition to a circular economy by advancing sustainable solid waste management practices in compliance with the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Act of 2022. Moreover, this project strives to foster knowledge sharing and attract green investments from European EPR organizations, such as sorting, recycling technologies, deposit return systems, waste tracking systems, and other plastic circularity and green packaging innovations.

Survey of Informal Waste Workers

A total of 57 Informal Waste Workers (IWWs) were surveyed from Tagbilaran City Central Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) and the MRFs of the project’s three demonstration barangays: Ubujan, Dampas, and Tiptip.

Overall, the junkshop mapping and informal waste worker survey serve as critical steps towards strengthening Tagbilaran City’s waste management. The data gathered will support efforts to organize, register, and recognize informal waste workers and recycling stakeholders, while providing opportunities for training and capacity-building on EPR-oriented waste management practices.
